Yellow Rose Supernova, The Mystical Journey & Spiritual Reboot
Title: Yellow Rose Supernova | Medium: Watercolor on Paper
Yellow Rose Supernova is an important work, a critical turning-point piece which is the first to be completed in phase II of Montana’s body of work: Exquisite Paintings on the Nature of Flowers. This painting marks the beginning of a new phase in Montana’s work dated early 2018.
It was early 2018 when I began this painting and I was feeling a tremendous sense of creative renewal. Living in Santa Fe, NM at the time, I enjoyed the creative vibe of the city and spent most of my time working in my studio, walking around town and on nature paths. YELLOW ROSE SUPERNOVA seemed different to me but I couldn't put my finger on it at first. It was about a month or two after an intense inner experience that was triggered by hearing the music of a man I'd seen performing at Carnegie Hall years before. We were in communication on social media and he'd seen my work. We had some kind of brief connection that made a profound impression on me, but it was so totally beyond words. He probably wasn't aware that anything had happened, but I sure was.
The exchange and communication was an activation of sorts, and it left things changed inside me. Apparently, he was the conduit of a message I needed to receive. The essence of that message gave me an understanding that art was a profound means of communication and of great importance for humanity. The energetics of it felt really good but that was not the end of it. It was the beginning of something new I didn't yet understand. Expansion can happen quickly and sometimes destabilize us. That's what happened to me. It's as if the upgrade makes you incompatible with your current surroundings but you don't know where you're supposed to be yet. The road ahead was unclear and what was about to unfold was a series of experiences that would challenge my sense of self-worth. The paintings that followed were all on point.
The download I received spoke of how energy may be wrapped in form but communicate to the minds of others in ways that go beyond our current structure of understanding. It provided me with confirmation for what I already knew, but more powerfully, and showed me that certain kinds of communication can come through unimpeded by ideas and fixed thought, and that I was to trust this more. And that's how the message came to me, with direct and immediate understanding, nothing in the way to think about. Boom. Supernova. Not easy to convey in words but perfect for me to work it through in my artwork. Creative expression was taking on new depth and had been planted as a seed that was germinating inside me.
For weeks, this experience filtered down into every aspect of my life and integrated a little at a time. I didn't realize it but I'd begun a whole new phase of my work with this painting. YELLOW ROSE SUPERNOVA marks the beginning of phase two of Exquisite Paintings on the Nature of Flowers, building on nearly 20 years of the original body of work that began in the late 1990s.
