/ What is a Giclee Print?
Pronounced: GEE-CLAY, the term adopted by the artwork in the 1980's is French. The word giclee is frequently used to describe a number of similar printing modalities including the IRIS (Intense Resolution Imaging System) printing process. Archival museum-quality paper or canvas is used and an ultra fine spraying of ink (a million drops per second) are applied by multiple color streams of high pressured inks. Each micro-drop of ink, four times smaller than a human hair, is about the size of a human blood cell. The print is then treated with an extra protective UV coating. The result is a virtually perfect reproduction of the original. This same technology is used by museums to replicate art works that can no longer be displayed. Like a etchings and serigraphs, printmaking is an art in and of itself. There are many factors and variables that contribute to the creation and quality of a print.
